What three hours at the kitchen counter buy you

You make it yourself

Two fresh pastas, rolled and cut by hand, with a chef at your side.

Two sauces, one red and one white

The menu changes with the season, so the sauces follow what is good that month.

Aperitivo and prosecco first

Cured meats, cheese and bruschetta while the dough rests.

A kitchen kept for the class

A private kitchen with modern equipment, reserved for your group.

Dinner, wine and gelato

You eat what you made at the table, with wine and a gelato to finish.

Two pastas and two sauces, by hand

Fresh pasta is flour, egg and a technique you only learn by doing it. In this class you do it twice. The chef shows each step, then you repeat it yourself: the well of flour, the egg, the kneading, the rolling and the cut. One pasta takes a red sauce and the other a white one, so you go home knowing both families of Roman sauce.

The class runs in English and keeps the group small enough for the chef to reach every board. You don't need to have cooked before, and what you learn is simple enough to repeat in your own kitchen.

The pizza option at booking

If you would rather make pizza, choose the wine and pizza-making option when you book; it replaces the pasta. A private version of the pasta class is sold as a third option. The fare, the kitchen and the meeting square stay the same. If you would rather be walked to other people's cooking, the Trastevere food and wine tours page gathers the evening walks, and some of them also cross the river into the Jewish Ghetto.

How the class runs

  1. Piazza di San Giovanni della Malva. You meet in the square in front of the church, 15 minutes early.
  2. Aperitivo and prosecco. Cured meats, cheese and bruschetta while the chef sets out the boards.
  3. The first pasta. Flour, egg and your own hands, from the well to the cut shape.
  4. The second pasta and both sauces. One red, one white, both from fresh ingredients.
  5. Dinner at the table. You eat the pasta you made, with wine poured.
  6. Gelato to close. The last course, and the end of the three hours.

Who this suits, and who should book something else

Book this if

You want to take a skill home, not just a memory of dinner. It suits families, couples and friends, and it is the lowest fare among the Trastevere tours we list for a full meal with wine. It adapts to most diets if you message the operator before the day.

Book something else if

You have coeliac disease: the class cannot adapt for it, and the Trastevere food allergy guide lists the tours that can. If you travel with a pushchair or a wheelchair, this kitchen is not suitable; the Trastevere twilight food tour is step-free. If you want a home kitchen for eight, the cooking class in a Roman home on Via Garibaldi is the one to choose.

What the fare covers

In the fare

  • A local chef-instructor
  • Prosecco and wine
  • Aperitivo appetisers
  • Two handmade pastas with two sauces
  • Gelato
  • All the ingredients for your meal
  • A private kitchen reserved for the class
  • Pizza-making instead of pasta, if you pick that option at booking

Not in the fare

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off
  • Gratuities (optional)

Piazza di San Giovanni della Malva: the meeting square

You meet in Piazza di San Giovanni della Malva, in front of the church of the same name, on the Santa Maria side of Trastevere. Arrive 15 minutes before the start. Your guide holds a red bag or a Devour Tours sign.

The square is a short walk from Piazza Trilussa and Ponte Sisto, so if you are coming from Campo de' Fiori, cross the footbridge first. Trastevere's lanes are narrow and cobbled, and the last few minutes are on foot. Every meeting point in the quarter is on the Trastevere map of meeting points.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book a food tour or a cooking class?
A food tour walks you to other people's cooking, several stops across an evening. A cooking class keeps you in one kitchen for about three hours, making two pastas by hand and eating them. Pick the class if you want to cook it again at home.
Are tips included in the fare?
No. Gratuities are not part of any fare shown here, and several listings say so outright. Tipping a guide is your choice, made at the end of the walk, and never a condition of joining it.
Do I need any cooking experience?
No. The chef shows each step before you do it, and the class is paced for beginners. People who already make pasta at home still come away with new techniques.
Can I make pizza instead of pasta?
Yes, if you choose the wine and pizza-making option when you book. You make your own pizza from scratch in the same kitchen. The pasta and pizza classes are separate bookings, so pick the one you want.
Is there a class in a real Roman home?
Yes, on a different listing. This class uses a kitchen reserved for the group, while the cooking class in a Roman home on Via Garibaldi takes eight guests and makes pasta and tiramisu. For a class that shops at a butcher's first, the pasta class with a food tour starts on Via Natale del Grande. For an evening walk instead, see the Trastevere twilight food tour.
